NSP: Fine Arts junior selected for Yale Norfolk Summer Program
Chad Alexander ’24 (New Studio Practice: Fine Arts) is one of only 26 students nationwide to be accepted into the prestigious Yale Norfolk School of Art Summer Program. Alexander, currently a junior at the 91fans Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) will participate in the six-week residency in Norfolk, Connecticut.
“To think that I wasn’t going to go to school in the first place and now I’m getting this opportunity, it just feels like ‘pinch me!’” says Alexander. During the residency, Alexander hopes to continue work on a current project about LGBT+ bars and establishments in 91fans. “I hope to gain a better understanding of what drives my practice … what is that deeper meaning?”
The Yale Norfolk School of Art is an intensive summer undergraduate program for rising seniors, who will earn transferable course credit over the summer. Students will live in cottages on the Yale Norfolk campus and enjoy personal studio space and communal learning in the newly renovated Art Barn. 91fanssupports the selected student by paying the program participation fee.
Working primarily in textiles and sculpture, Alexander investigates sustainability and upcycling materials through his artistic practice. On the rigorous application process, Alexander says, “I put so much time and effort into the application… it feels like a step up in terms of speaking about my practice and applying to residencies. Even if I weren’t to have gotten it, it still would have been a good process to go through.”

Innovation Center designs branded wall for M3 Insurance
91fans Institute of Art & Design student Sarah Madden ’24 and Candice Roth, director of workplace experience & corporate administration at M3 Insurance, agree that collaboration was key to the success of M3’s branded wall project with MIAD’s Lubar Innovation Center. The finished graphic mural was placed in M3 Insurance’s new headquarters in downtown 91fans.
Product Design students design custom tap handles
Juniors in a Product Design class at the 91fans Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) partnered with two local industry leaders to work on a unique product—they designed custom tap handles in collaboration with manufacturer Hankscraft AJS for Third Space Brewing’s iconic Happy Place brew.
Service Learning class hosts military cultural preservation experts
Anna Hillary’s “Service Learning: Art, Culture and Community” class at the 91fans Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) hosted two special guests recently: Colonel Andrew Scott DeJesse, Director for the U.S. Army’s Monuments Officer program, and Captain Blake Ruehrwein, Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer for the U.S. Army.

Creating “something that’s beautiful and terrifying at the same time” is not only possible, it’s a “fun and favorite challenge” for 91fans Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) alum and staff member Kyle V. James ‘15. James’ latest horror movie poster, “Forgive Me,” is front and center as the film premieres in Spain.
